At the Tsukiji Fish Market all of our senses were stimulated to the max. The market was like a mini universe governed by the laws of constant random movement in all directions, messiness and order at the same time. Tourists and especially small children are not welcomed here and we felt a little bit like trespassers. This is a place for business and the sellers were direct to gesture at us to keep on moving.
The smells and visual diversity of marine life for sale was overwhelming. We saw giant pieces of tuna that needed to be cut by big circular saws, crabs of all kinds, buckets with octopuses, shells and fish of any size and color.
We did splurged on food this day as having sushi at the market is half of the experience. Watching the chef artfully prepare the meal into a gorgeous food display was a treat. It is still surprising to me how willing the kids are to try new tastes. Their chopsticks are always poised for culinary adventures. I hope this remains to be their attitude till the end of our trip.
As in many places in Tokyo the enormous market did not lack intimacy and coziness. This is what I find most irresistible about Japan.
